When Did Less Become Enough?
“Enough” is an interesting word. We use it all the time—enough money, enough time, enough space, enough attention, enough success. But how do we decide what enough actually is?
Think about something you wanted ten years ago. Maybe it was a particular career, home, relationship, lifestyle, or financial goal. If you have it today, does it feel the way you imagined? And if you do not have it, do you still want it?
Life has a way of changing our definitions. A larger paycheck might matter less than having control over your time. A packed social calendar might become less appealing than a quiet Saturday. Something you once thought you could live without might suddenly matter more—connection, stability, freedom, laughter, or simply time to enjoy your life.
Sometimes our definition of enough changes because we have grown. Sometimes our circumstances change. And sometimes we simply become accustomed to what we have.
There is no universal measurement for enough. What feels abundant to one person may feel restrictive to another. Even our own answer can change from one season of life to the next.
So perhaps the question is not whether you have more or less than you once imagined.
What does enough look like to you now?
Maybe it is a question worth asking every once in a while.
